From Networking to Community: Building Meaningful Connections in HR
Networking remains crucial for HR professionals, but it’s no longer about collecting business cards. (I haven’t used business cards in years!) As Reid Hoffman, co-founder of LinkedIn, states, “Relationships are living, breathing things. Build them with care.”
Step 1: Define your goals
A survey by HBR revealed that 65% of professionals say their network contributed to a recent career opportunity. Are you looking for advice, mentorship, or talent? Define your goals.
Step 2: Engage authentically
Participate in communities like HRPros.ai, which offers Slack channels, virtual meetups, and Q&A sessions tailored to HR challenges.
Step 3: Give more than you take
A study by Adam Grant found that “givers” in professional networks tend to be the most successful in the long run. Share resources or assist a colleague whenever possible.
Step 4: Stay consistent
A pet peeve of mine is inconsistency in the workplace. Great attitude and energy one week, poor attitude and energy the next. Regular engagement is key. Idea: Dedicate 10–15 minutes a day to reading, sharing, or contributing to discussions.
Takeaway:
Networking isn’t a one-time effort. By focusing on authenticity and mutual support, you can turn a network into a community that drives career and personal growth.
